Mount Mitchell State Park

At 6,684 feet in elevation, Mount Mitchell is the highest mountain East of the Mississippi River. The namesake, Dr. Elisha Mitchell, lost his life on the western side of the mountain in 1857 and is buried on the summit. The park has an interpretive museum, a restaurant open May through October, concessions, snacks, gifts and souvenirs, picnic shelters, and hiking trails. Free admission.

Historic Altapass Orchard

The Altapass Orchard is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway around milepost 331, about 15-20 minutes from the Alpine Inn. The orchard was restored and re-opened in the early 1990s, and it’s been a working orchard ever since. They have a gift shop with souvenirs, books, toys, ice cream and fresh apples, and they feature live music and mountain dancing during the season. Fun, interesting place.

Crabtree Falls

Crabtree Falls is a 60-ft cascading falls that rushes over a cliff and drops into a clear pool and sprays mist in the air. Lush vegetation grows right up to the rocks on the water’s edge. The hike to the falls is a moderate-to-strenuous 2.5 mile scenic loop that offers several views of the falls from different vantage points. Trailhead is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Crabtree Meadows near milepost 339.
